I am not a fan of this movie. The enjoyment level was slight! One of the things it seriously lacks is a firm directorial hand. Well, it may all be based on actual events, but that did nothing to add to my overall experience. A connection I needed was missing! Of main concern was to see Franco in a fairly serious film. I can say it was somewhat decent NOT to see him in one his lamebrain comedies of the moronic type, equally not to see Jonah Hill in junk films he has taken on. The pair hold the screen and our attention a good bit, but the MASK, unfortunately, slips away in certain scenes so as to let me down tremendously. Of the pair, Hill is better in his delineation of character. Franco is not totally right for this role as any type of manipulator. Unfairly, I still see him as a master of films of the worst kind not to mention an OSCAR gig that was disastrous for his career! True Story, however, is an improvement! This solitary film is not going to change the mess of his career overnight. He has to earn back our trust! It's his to gain or lose! A very serious note about this production is that there is too much of a GREY area! Persons or situations are not fully black or white, not fully identifiable as being on the right or wrong side, so to speak. Too many small matters in this feature remain "iffy" with me! I'm left with no choice but two thumbs WAY DOWN!
