It aint easy being a kid. Especially for Max, who asks for more than his share of attention. When one of his sister's friend "accidentally" destroys his igloo while they were player, Max breaks into his sister's bedroom and mess it up. Later when his single mother has company, Max starts yelling and acts inappropriately. He runs away from home and find himself and a Forest where big creatures live as a family. Max claims himself a king and they all follow his lead, hoping he'll make everyday a happy one. I dont know if a kid can really enjoy Spike Jones adaptation of Marice Sendak's children book. I'm sure though, they cant understand what its really about. Maybe the wild things are what's inside all of us. The creatures, or monsters, all really have adult problems to deal with. Where the Wild Things Are really is a kid flick for grown ups. There are some genuine magical moments when all Max and his new friends do is play. Weither its jumping around or throwing dirt balls at each other. The soundtrack is pretty amazing and adds to the feel of melancholy throughout the film. The voice work by the actor is pretty amazing. James Gandolfini makes you believe is the suit and Catherine O'Hara, a pro, is great as usual. Lets not forget to mention that kid, Max Records, who carries the entire film. If a child actor ever gave a good performance, its this one. It took Spike Jonze seven years to finally give us his third film. It was worth the wait.
