Despite Kirk Douglas in a great role and Lauren Bacall as leading lady, it was a big treat to see Doris Day attempt something different than her usual musicals at Warner Brothers. It led to some great dramatic roles during the fifties, but Doris did prefer musicals and light comedies. When she made MIDNIGHT LACE ( in which she was awesome ) SHE FELT IT WAS TOO MUCH OF A STRAIN AND NEVER MADE A DRAMATIC FILM again! Really too bad as she played dramatic roles as well as any dramatic star.
