42 is a great movie to begin the conversation of racism in America with children. It provides many teaching moments for parents with preteens, who likely hear "the n word" bandied about freely and regularly. I had a friend ask about the language and I told her. She said she did not want her boys to hear the word. Whether they hear it or not, the word is real, it does exist and chances are they will hear it. Better to hear it with an adult who can explain the history of the hurtful, painful side of the word - as it is heavily emphasized here. This is also a story about excelling in sports, overcoming obstacles, effecting change, standing up for one's self, perseverence, and dedication to what one loves. It is also about preparing one's self for opportunity so that when it knocks, one can answer.
