7 Khoon Maaf

Click here to show this review. I expect much better of Vishal Bhardwaj. His films are usually a great blend of the innovative, superb performances and entertainment. He's hit the nail on the head again with the novelty and performances again, but 7 Khoon Maaf is sorely lacking in the entertainment department. The film's basic plot is about Sussanah and her seven husbands, yes, yes, but we really don't care much for her or them. The reasons for Susannah's dissatisfaction with each hubby is always clearly laid out and shared with us, but I could care less. (Though let me add that the scenes where we're shown Irfan Khan's disgusting kink are too gratuitous and actually had a few poor ladies in our audience leave in horror.) If 7 Khoon is redeemed by anything, it is the great performances. Priyanka excels once again in a central role and is ably supported by a troupe of great comrades, marital and otherwise. Annu Kapoor and Vivaan Shah stand out most for me. Unfortunately though, I still think none of these characters are good enough to merit an award. They just didn't stand out enough. The biggest shocker is that apart from the unforgettable "Darling", even the music this time is so so. Bhardwaj's songs work ok in the movie, but I couldn't really remember the non-Darling tunes afterwards. I do hope Vishal Bhardwaj remembers the importance of entertainment with his next film. This time the weird factor has seemed to engulf him.
