Brad Pitt is a total movie star, and one with useful acting chops.
Marion Cotillard, arguably the talent heiress to Meryl Streep, certainly a great force with real skills, and transparency.
They just don't quite gel as credibly besotted with each other.
The whole film is competent, but seems like it was done in a hurry, there is no something extra anywhere.
Performances are quite wooden, the film craft nothing above and beyond.
The British period serials are technically as good or better for any episode, I can think of.
The story's evolution just never tensions the hooks to potential.
Made with more budget in the production, rather than the cast, might've produced a better variation. The script though, isn't too compelling.

Made with Ryan Gosling or Romain Durais and Cotillard or Audrey Toutou as leads might've
pulled the bias back to the story. I like Pitt, but he's just not the best fit here, and it was contagious.
