I don't normally critique other peoples' reviews but so many missed the obvious underlying thing about this movie's plot which is that this is based on events that ACTUALLY OCCURRED in the 80's where numerous politicians were actually prosecuted and convicted of taking bribes and the level of money that was trading hands... Back to the film: Christian Bale did a fantastic job here and was the most believable in this rendition. Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence were good as the (7/10) gold digging manipulative (and a bit slutty) antagonists and Bradley Cooper was overacting and does poorly when intense emotions are needed to drive the plot line. Louis K. C. is a comedian by trade and does a peculiarly good job as the straight man for Cooper's character but the humor undermines the intensity that this story deserves which is where this movie falls down. The suspense, drama and pathos was underplayed and leaves this movie feeling more like a Disney version of what could have been laid out like All The President's Men and had more depth. Not bad movie but for me, a one watcher. Seen it, Got it. Archive it. Won't be buying this one on DVD.
