The 1935 production of Anna Karenina starring Greta Garbo and a whole stable of MGM stars is worth a view to compare it to the many Anna Karenina films that followed, especially that of Vivien Leigh, countless tele miniseries and the latest film with Keira Knightly. Garbo is not bad, but I would have wanted to see a stronger woman with a spine. It didn't come across that well with the Garbo performance. MGM pulled out all the stops for this feature and I would love to know if it was a hit considering it came from a very serious Russian novel that talked of doom and gloom as the depression was still raging on!
