Ant-Man

Even the most ardent Marvel fan would have to admit that Ant Man isn't the most compelling character, a potential clue as to why it took so long to get this movie made, when Dr Hank Pym is so essential to the Universe, and really should have been cinematically introduced a long time ago. Thankfully, his introduction is a big reason as to why Ant Man is a lot better than I was expecting, and more than earns its place alongside the likes of Iron Man and Capt America. Even if this film can't match those in terms of sheer action-packed ferocity, the fact that an actor of Michael Douglas' calibre was cast as Pym, and is essentially telling the story, makes a world of difference. Paul Rudd is also a good choice for Scott Lang, as his natural smart alecness and tendency toward self-deprecating humor, meshes perfectly with the inevitable inferiority complex associated with Ant Man. Yet what really allows this film to work so well is that it's different. It's not all bullets flying, cars exploding and massive destruction everywhere. It utilizes the CGI to showcase wonderfully creative, miniature moments, that should have both kids and parents smiling, and does so while keeping violence down to a minimum. A pleasant surprise, and a surefire winner for Marvel fans.
