Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ

    An epic presentation.

What put this silent film screening over the top was the accompanying music played on a Wurlitzer organ. The written music has been altered, expanded and improved as the years have gone by and the organ, which sounded like two full orchestras, was the perfect instrument.

The film itself is book-ended by the birth and death of Jesus, the balance being dedicated to the fictitious Judah Ben-Hur. Judah's invented adventures allowed the film-makers a great deal of leeway in depicting the beginning of the Common Era.

The apex of the first half of the film, in which there were many highlights, was a sea battle between the Roman navy and a group of pirate ships. Quite frankly the event leaves the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise in its wake.

The chariot race towards the end of the film is another marvelous example of early 20th century ingenuity. The competition, with chariots being pulled by four fine steeds galloping in tandem, was brilliantly choreographed and edited. For good measure, director Fred Niblo had the camera speed slowed down during the filming, so when run at normal speed the action appears to be accelerated. With the organ at full volume, these were exhilarating moments.

Note: This screening took place at Casa Loma, Toronto, ON.
