Hal Ashby's incandescent, truthful film on the life of Woody Guthrie comes off as a piece of Americana. Melinda Dillon and Ronnie Cox in lead roles help a great deal but it is David Carradine's complete transformation as the folksinger that creates a noble life of a man at the height of the depression. The Oscar nominated script sounds as natural and real as those whose lives are depicted. This was/is an important film which earned other Oscar Nominations and won the Oscar for Best Cinematography by legendary Haskell Wexler.
