This film begs your indulgences, and being in an accepting frame of mind.
I think it's in the same vein as "As Good As It Gets", but lighter on punch.
It is more profane than it needs to be, too often the case lately. Two thousand years of evolving a great language, more than five common expletives can be definitively expressive, Hollywood might absorb that fact.
Pacino is in fine form, as a parody of faded success. Not most original, people in his orbit may feel "borrowed upon".
Annette Benning is winsome, unbowed and caring, a fine interpretation of managerial pro, operating a few levels below potential.
Chistopher Plummer aces the "bend not break, and don't try to", aspect of his character,
Jennifer Garner, as always, cast as a deeper, giving soul, and does it well.
Two roles stood out, tho', in this company, a feat.
Young Giselle Eisenberg is quite a find, as Hope.
Bobby Cannavale's work here is as evocative as one could hope for, a consummate pro.
Solid cast otherwise.
Not a great classic, but it'll hang on Pacino's peg as one of his more accessible. Aces a 7.5, some way from an 8!
