Deliver Us from Evil

Horror is my favourite genre of film. I love getting scared. Director Scott Derrickson proved to be one of the best in the horror genre with The Exorcism of Emily Rose and one of my favourite horror films, Sinister. So I guess you could say I was extremely excited for his latest horror flick, Deliver Us From Evil. Well, though I was a bit disappointed, Deliver Us From Evil is actually a very good horror film. The story follows NY police officer Ralph Sarchie as he teams up with a priest to combat evil possessions in their city. The story is actually very good, with a really unique and cool blend of crime thriller and supernatural horror. I was pleasantly surprised on how well they blended together. The acting is for the most part decent. Eric Bana gives an okay performance, but he sometimes comes off as cheesy and stupid. The supporting cast also do okay jobs. The scares in this movie are very mixed. Most of the scares are jump-scares, which could be good or bad. Many of the scares are stupid false scares, with cats shrieking and things falling. However, when there are good scares, they are utterly fantastic. The direction is very good, with some very cool shots and great lighting. The musical score is perfect and the editing is quite good. One huge disappointment was the final 20 minutes. I won't spoil anything, but they go the way most generic horror films go and the ending was just not good. I expected much more considering the majority of the film was quite good. Overall, Deliver Us From Evil is a fun horror film with a good story and a few amazing scares. Though it may not be entirely memorable, it's a fun time at the movies.
