    Dracula Untold

Universal Studios is planning a shared "Monster Universe" (much like The Avengers), and if Dracula Untold performs well, it will likely be known as the first film in this series. A prologue if you will. The movie does have its pros and cons as the starting ground to this franchise, and pros and cons as a stand alone movie. Primarily, Luke Evans shines in this movie as the title character. He is easily the best thing about this movie, and while I don't necessarily recommend paying full price to see Dracula Untold in theatres, it is worth watching at some point just to see him perform. I am not familiar with his work, aside from his role in the Hobbit films, but I will give his next movie instant credibility for his presence. The rest of the acting ranged from unmemorable to bad with the exception of Charles Dance, who had a small role near the beginning that was quite good. The writing was less than stellar with some of the medieval storytelling feeling very messy. Some scenes did not work, or just did not make sense. The filmmakers did not spend enough time setting up the world Dracula inhabits, thereby narrowing the cinematic scope of the film. I felt no emotional attachment nor was I given any reason to care about any of the characters other than Dracula himself, which certainly reduced the impact of certain scenes. There were a few entertaining action sequences; one in particular near the end of the story that has been featured predominantly in the trailers and shows off some impressive special effects. There are a few scenes featuring Dracula-esque action where I was thinking "this is what I want from a Dracula movie / monster movie". Those scenes are extremely entertaining and well-done. Overall, Dracula Untold is a mixed bag, and while there are some elements that worked and that I hope the studio recognizes and features in their other monster movies, the film is ultimately too cliched and generic to recommend. I do hope I get to see Luke Evans play Dracula again as he is the redeeming feature that will make this movie worthwhile if you find it on cable or Netflix.
