    Freedom Writers

I was impressed by this film, which reminded me, in many ways, of the 1967 film "To Sir With Love" that starred Sidney Poitier. My only quibble is that, in my experience, one of the major handicaps suffered by children coming from the ghettos is their inability to read and write; yet the children portrayed in the film had astonishing communication skills! However, I accept that this might be one of the compromises required in order to translate the story to the screen. The other thing that struck me was the portrayal of the education system; I could not help thinking that this must be a caricature because the teachers and the school board bureaucracy seemed to totally inward focussed. Full marks to Hillary Swank for pulling it off as an actress, and also as producer..
