Based on true facts of mobster Mickey Cohen from the late 1940's period in Los Angeles, this feature is a hard boiled, hard hitting affair with a nicely done performance from Emma Stone and a quartet of sparkling male performances: Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin. This was one hell of an entertaining mob flick that never lets up for a moment.

Gangster Squad was alright. Probably the worst mob movie, only because all of the other mob movies are 8s, 9s, and 10s.

Done comic book style. Sean Penn does a great job as Mobster (as if there was any doubt) Love Josh Brolin! He does a great job as a comic book style hero. Great shoot up scenes and fight scenes. Emma Stone is a great Femme Fatale. Cast is superb. Has great style. Somewhat worthy of a 10 but fell slightly short as the story etc. did not really grip me. Definitely great entertainment.

"Gangster Squad" which is loosely based on true life events takes us back to life in the late 40's after the end of WWII when people are just starting to put their interupted lives back together. The movie set in the "Hollywoodland" of yesteryear gives us a glamourous look into the nightlife and the not so glamourous world of criminals bent on controlling the underworld through gambling, drugs and prostitution. Sean Penn as Jewish gangster Mickey Cohen gives a great performance, one of his best. Although this movie is quite violent at times it is still worth seeing. A nice period piece with an eye for detail it takes us back in time to those black and white shootemup gangster movies of old.

I wasn't hyped about this, when I saw the previews I thought to myself "great another teen movie that glorifies violence, sex, and breaking the law" (see "American Gangster" and "Scarface" for reference) I'm glad that the movie had a bit more substance to it than that, and at times almost followed along like a 30's crime saga (not the comedic ones) I felt like the movie wanted to be the next big mob or gangster movie but didn't really make par for that, mostly because the emphasis seemed squarely on "the squad" and didn't add enough depth as to why I should care. Taking it for what it is, it's graphic in the sense that the characters are distinct and bold, it reminds me of a comic book-stylized kind of movie. I give it a generous 4/10. Recommended for free tv showings.

Interesting but yet kinda slow moving but when it actually started to pick up it was intense and exciting.
