Robert Duvall is definitely the go-to person to portray old coots. Here, he plays Felix an old hermit for some 40-odd years who wants to "get low" at a "funeral" while he is still above ground! He wants to explain his violent past to the town assemblage. Oily mortician Bill Murray (great!) is only too glad to oblige. To see Duvall and Murray in scenes together is a real treat, however the movie is plagued by whimsy in spots and the final reveal is not all that startling. It's worthwhile in the final analysis but it is a middling effort with oscar level acting. Embrace the contradiction, I guess.
