As tense a courtroom as I have ever seen. Yet this film is not about murder or mayhem. It is about the glass... make that opaque... ceiling that exists in some Israeli courtrooms regarding the feminine gender. Women in Israel can put a rifle on their shoulder, go to war and die beside men; they can plant potatoes, open settlements and build skyscrapers beside men, but if married in a religious ceremony, they cannot get a divorce without their husband's approval. Viviane, after 30 years of marriage and children, wants out. Her husband Elisha says no. If the husband says 'no', the rabbinical court says 'no'. That is the law. Ronit Alkabetz and Simon Abkarian each perform marvellously as people with their own belief system and their own definition of how a relationship should function. This low-key film is gripping in its telling.
