Hail Caesar is one of those Coen brothers films that are neither masterpieces nor total duds. The movie is a tribute to Hollywood of the 1950's, but with the extra risqué factor ( e. g. Channing Tatum does a recreation of Gene Kelly while S. J. is very much the Esther Williams super swimmer.) I think the brothers deliberately set out to make a film that was not plot driven with amazing technicolour of the 1950's re-created very faithfully. It seems to give some idea of what it was like to run a studio in the 1950's era when the big studio system was on its way out!
