Hercules

This is a decent film that is much better than I thought it might be, but not quite good enough to be considered "good". While The Rock is fun to watch, the plot twists are somewhat interesting, the humor does succeed at times, and the action scenes deliver on their goal of entertaining the audience, there is still a lot that this movie could have improved upon. My biggest problem with Hercules is its atrocious dialogue. Many of the lines coming from the actors are either cheesy, cliche, or unintentionally funny. It isn't until the first big action sequence that the film stops being downright terrible. Up until then, about a half hour in, the movie is just painful. That turning point, a fight scene, is extremely entertaining as the movie doesn't take itself too seriously, and allows these scenes to be over-the-top and fun to watch. During the second and third acts, Hercules manages to become an entertaining, albeit forgettable, action adventure. The story touches on certain elements that I did not expect, and was pleasantly surprised to find in the film. However, some of these advancements in the story are literally taken away or rendered unimportant for the sake of having a cheesy effect, and to move the story forward. The effects themselves are fine, but nothing that HAS to be seen on the big screen (the 3D was pointless, except for the credits) Overall, Hercules is a forgettable movie that is still better than it could have been, and while it has its moments, it is brought down by its paint-by-numbers execution and its truly terrible dialogue. I would not recommend a trip to the theater for this, but if you do find it on cable TV or Netflix down the road, skip to the half hour mark and try watching it simply as campy entertainment.
