It is in creating cute and lovable characters that DreamWorks Animation really excels, whether it be Toothless in How to Train Your Dragon, or "Oh" in Home. Voiced by Jim Parsons (Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory), this small purple alien encapsulates the innocence and charm of Home as a movie. The story is quirky, and while I have heard many arguments that it is too reminiscent of Lilo and Stitch, I argue that many elements are quite original. In a movie aimed at kids, it is essential that the plot doesn't drag, and Home is able to avoid that with a fast paced narrative where there is always something happening. I always end up enjoying DreamWorks cartoons, and what stood out about Home really was the character of Oh. Even in the trailers, he is established as an outcast, and maybe a misfit, but the film establishes the character perfectly; making it almost impossible not to care about him. But like every kids movie, the plot slows down before the climax so that the characters can "learn their lessons" along with the target audience. And while this does happen in Home, the movie doesn't waste time trying to drag it out, but rather makes its point and immediately gets back to the adventure. The humor is constant, and made me laugh more than a few times while still being harmless. There are jokes for kids, as well as plenty of nods at adults that made many of the parents in the theatre chuckle. Home is a fun, light-hearted, and very cute animated film that provides much of what DreamWorks is good at. The character of Oh will have people laughing, and the fast paced narration will keep kids from getting bored.
