Here's an original, intelligent, thought-provoking film that opposes science and religious belief. This may seem like a very cerebral subject matter but it's not so: I found the movie captivating, entertaining, moving, sometimes surprisingly shocking. And a few times, slightly confusing (or should I say: too open to interpretations?) It's also stylized with often a superb dreamlike visual quality. The only very minor thing that I somewhat disliked was Michael Pitt's 'retarded adolescent' looks (when he's actually nearing 35), his chain smoking, his unkept hands with their dirty nails (often seen in close-ups) and his strangely protruding lips, Yet, I must admit that his acting is quite adequate.
