Rossellini's 'Il Generale della Rovere' is an upgrade from most of Roberto Rossellini's films of the fifties, many of which were duds compared to his work from the forties. Vittorio De Sica, a great director himself, truly makes the film with his portrayal of Grimaldi, an insignificant crook at various stages of this WW II drama involving the Nazis.
