When this film played on Turner, I was curious as Bogie has rarely given a bad performance. In this taut 'film noir' by genius Nicholas Ray, Bogart is in top form as a worn out, studio screenwriter whose life turns inside out with a murder that has been committed and a neighbour across the way (Gloria Graham) in much better form than her Oscar win for The Bad and the Beautiful. It seems the suspense keeps building with a bold and daring finish. A real class act of a film, all round!
