This is a very, very good thriller. Tommy Lee Jones is mesmerising, John Goodman is outstanding, Sasgaard is always outstanding, Buddy Guy's cameo is wonderful, Mary Steenburgen is one of Hollywood's underused treasures, Levon Helm is close to perfect and Tavernier's Louisiana perfectly echoes the brooding dangerous beauty of the James Lee Burke novel. I saw this movie on DVD and watched in many times, always wishing I'd seen it on the big screen. Better released late than never. In typical European style, the director doesn't tie up all the loose end nor take his audience by the hand and lead them step by step from A to Z. He presumes that great writing, brilliant actors at the top of their form, a haunting location and an intriguiging plot will keep adults hooked. And he is right. Go and see it.
