Bravo! I had no idea this film was to be a musical until my friend shared this with me. Loving theater and musicals as I do, we went to see it at my daughter's request. We were blown away by the superb cast, a great adaptation from the play to the screen, the special effects (the she giant:)), beautiful stage voices and the sheer brilliance of Stephen Sondheim as always. His songs are never meant to be simple. My husband, a musician in his own right, marvelled at the songs, the brilliant but sometimes quick pace of the lyrics and all the significant messages embedded in the film. Meryl Streep is always intensely stellar in any role and I think she will grab an Oscar for this one. Anna Kendrick's voice shines, Emily Blunt sings her heart out with passion and talent and the two child actors were superb, displaying lovely and powerful voices. You will like some characters at times and not like others. You will laugh and perhaps shed a tear. Comedy, drama and tragedy were interwoven as in life and we were captivated until the very end; never bored. I listened to the lyrics intently and they moved me with thought. It is definitely not for a child's understanding but if they are old enough and not faint of heart, they will enjoy and recognize the fairy tales strewn together."Into the Woods" is certainly not a typical or predictable piece of film. It is unpredictable as is life; sometimes not a fairy tale at all, So be careful what you wish for. But venture into the woods and do live some fantasies as you did when you were a child.
