    Irrational Man

Woody's new one is a great improvement over Magic in the Moonlight and Blue Jasmine. There are the usual tropes concerning angst, the futility of existence and a May-December relationship. Both Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone are outstanding in their characterizations. The casting of former indie darling, Parker Posey as the sex-starved faculty wife is inspired. To me, despite all the philosophical musings over ethics, morality and man's purpose in life, this movie (at its core) is likely inspired by the old cinema noire crime dramas of the 1940s. I like this film and it might be considered a companion piece for Crimes and Misdemeanors, Cassandra's Dream, and Match Point.
