There is a certain fairy tale quality to David O. Russell's latest film Joy. A whimsical tale of struggle and hardship, loosely based on a true story, following the trials of the supremely dysfunctional Mangano family and their only hope for salvation, a plucky and creative girl named Joy. Alternately uplifting and crushing, O. Russell really toys with the viewer's emotions here. You, like lead actress Jennifer Lawrence, are completely at his mercy. It can be difficult to watch, but there are great benefits for those who stick it out. First and foremost is Lawrence, who is simply sensational. Despite her age and lack of real life children, she is totally convincing as a desperate mother, particularly in some of the more painful moments. She is simultaneously solid and vulnerable, tough and tender, determined and hopeless, this is truly a performance of wild extremes. Pardon the awful pun but it is a "joy" to watch. Strong supporting work from literally EVERYONE, is also a plus. The meat and potatoes of this story might not be much, but the packaging is first class, and the strong woman at its center a very empowering role model.
