This is a sad yet glorifying tale of the oppressors and the oppressed, set during the age of the French Revolution (1848) No mention of Les Miserables can exclude mention of its author, Victor Hugo. Hugo was a man of letters and of politics. Poet, novelist, playwright. He was elected to public office, was a champion in the fight against social injustice, and at one point was exiled from his native country. Tom Hooper, recent winner of the 'best Director' Oscar (The King's Speech, 2010), leads a high profile cast in bringing this romance/tragedy set to music onto the screen. Although the film has some weaknesses (length, slow moments), the genre, the number of speaking parts and the sets would pose a challenge for any director. Hooper may have again helmed a film recognized throughout the film world.
