A disturbing twisted drama/satire of the amorality and greed in Hollywood's populace. Every character (except for Robert Pattinson) have parked their moral compass at the base of the Hollywood sign. Julianne Moore snagged the acting prize at Cannes for her overheated performance as a washed-up, hysterical actress trying to obtain a part in a film, which is a remake of one her late "mommie dearest" actress-mother played years ago. The movie here lets us in on the world of the Weisses, a dysfunctional family to end all dysfunctional families consisting of false guru John Cussack, stage mother Olivia Williams managing her son's career (Evan Bird -the McCaulley Culkin from Hell) There is much kinky behavior. Fear is generated in the Weiss family after post-medically treated daughter Agatha appears on the scene and threatens to expose some deep, dark family secrets. This is the real monster movie of the year; only here the demons are well-hidden and don't sport fright masks. David Cronenberg has produced yet another heart-of-darkness scenario but in the bright skies and well-lit nights of Los Angeles.
