This is an inspiring movie based on the life of James White and a bunch of underprivileged Latino kids from McFarland who pursue the California cross-country running state championship in 1987. This movie is not just about sport (ie cross-country running) but also about faith, family, community, adversity, poverty, determination, perseverance, and strength. The performances by all the actors, especially Kevin Costner (who is in the lead role of James White), are strong and you feel a connection to the characters in the story. The cinematography and shots of the landscape of California are beautiful. This is a well-directed film. The downside to the film is that several edits and omissions were made to certain actual true events and facts (ie White’s Christian faith being a key motivator for his leadership)
