MIDWAY proved one point to me! One could have the most potent, powerful story of WW II but with a non descript writer and a director whose name is hardly known or talented, not too much will come of it. With a cast of male actors, some leading male actors from the 40's on, others of younger vintage, all great stars, not much good came from this feature. One can't get a good motion picture without some " blood sweat and tears " as Sir Winston Churchill famously said. It's like trying to get blood from a stone. A total waste of time with 15 great stars going through the motions, seemingly, as there was not much to work with. I recently read a statement attributed to the late Hank Fonda, who starred in the film, who seemed to echo what I just wrote or vice versa. It was hardly a great motion picture like Darryl F. Zanuck's possibly last film as producer, THE LONGEST DAY; more a film quickly put together without much thought or effort. I just hated it.
