    Monkey Kingdom

Lots of monkey business, here. More fun than a barrel of monkeys! And don't forget the monkeyshines! That's it. Now I'm done with the bad puns. The movie is in the usual Disney vein of ascribing human characteristics to beasties in their particular environment. Underneath it all is some information of an educational bent (eg., grooming, a rigid social system comparable to that of humans, hunting for victuals, family life and evading predators) Speaking of the latter topic, a predator-in this case a huge, ugly 7 foot monitor lizard-is regarded as a villain. The movie fails to discuss the value of predators in the ecosystem, i.e. they have a role in the population control of our heroic protagonists and hence they have a role in maintaining a balanced ecosystem. Without belaboring the point-eat and be eaten-this is Nature's way. The film misses the opportunity to explain this to the kiddies in the theatre. Narration by Tina Fey (who is a wonderful comedienne otherwise) was less than adequate. Was Morgan Freeman unavailable?
