An interesting profile of a sociopath - the intense refocus on an objective and the amoral progression towards its achievement. (This is not representative of any other broad societal type as some seem to want to conclude.) Gyllenhaal handles the role with mesmerizing skill - though I thought the slicked back hair and periodic eye glints slightly overstating the wolf as predator metaphor. Very absorbing with a nice parody of TV news; its preoccupation with local tragedy and manipulation of story-lines to fit the parameters of predetermined biases that might enhance ratings.
