About halfway through, I almost left. That's exactly when it starts getting interesting so I'm glad I stayed. I saw the original by Park Chan-Wook 3 times and I wasn't expecting this adaptation to be better but I didn't expect it to be this bad in the beginning either. One thing Spike Lee succeeds in doing is taking one of the sickest revenge plot ever and giving it a twist to make it even sicker which is no small feat by itself. The choice of actors is OK but Lee's direction is definitely not as masterful. It lacks color, emotion, humor. I say stick to the original but this one is not without interest if you can manage to stay interested until the halfway mark. I concur with a review in The Gazette. The original character played by Choi Min-Sik was a really nice guy until his life has a vicious twist of fate. One couldn't help but feel for him no matter what happens after. The character played by Josh Brolin has never been nice so it's hard to have any empathy for him whatsoever. It's a very important difference which Lee unfortunately chose to ignore. Another warning: It's extremely violent. The original was but it had less guns and more humor to make it more digestible.
