This is an oater in the revisionist mode (McCabe and Mrs. Miller, Unforgiven, The Homesman) and thus it deglamorizes the West. The title may or may not refer to the expression: "Go West (young man)". The cinematography is glorious (the vistas of New Zealand are substituting for Colorado) the cold-hearted bounty hunters are suitably venal and the casting of Michael Fassbender and Ben Mendelsohn (who nearly steals the picture) is inspired. There are some exaggerations. Since he was not wearing a hat would Jay avoid a painful red tan? One character is shot through the chest and lower leg with a bullet the size of an aerosol can, fired from a rifle the size of a bazooka. And yet, a few minutes later, the victim is up and about as good as new. Perhaps there is a certain mythological quality to this fair to middling horse opera.
