If there's ever been an instrument that could cry for the Blues, it's the alto sax. The late Frank Morgan (1933-2007) was one of its top practitioners, and the film is a tribute to his life and talents. It takes the form of a concert in front of people Morgan got to spend a considerable part of his life with, the inmates and staff of San Quentin prison. Morgan was not a lot different from many other musicians, both black & white, both then and now. He used drugs to unwind without realizing the consequences.
The financial structure of the music business wasn't generous, even for those with Morgan's talents, so burglary soon entered his sphere of activities. Ergo a life of revolving doors into and out of penal institutions. If you happen to see or hear any musician perform, pray that he stays away from pharmaceuticals, whether you like the music or not.
