Now I am not what you would call a Star Trek fan. In fact I never really enjoyed any of the tv shows or countless films made about the voyages of the Enterprise. Yet even I was wowed by JJ Abrams' franchise reboot, for its freshness, its cleverness and above all its pure entertainment value. This sequel offers diminishing returns in all three aformentioned areas yet still remains enjoyable thanks to some splendid action set pieces and good work from all the usual gang returning for another go-round. Benedict Cumberbatch is also a welcome addition playing a villain whose identity will likely give Trekies a joygasm. Fails to top, or match the original, which is every sequels goal, yet still a worthwhile ride for fans of the series and even some who are not.
