A true Hitchcock-esque scary movie with enough jumps and starts to keep the viewer on the edge of the seat throughout. Is the Babadook real? Who conjures the Babdook - the son or the mother? Who is protecting who from the Babdook? A horror movie in the traditional sense - very well done. Other reviewers made the connection to the mother fighting mental illness. As someone who was widowed suddenly and at a relatively young age, I saw the Babadook as the blackness of overwhelming grief and the power is can have over a person if allowed to fester unchecked. Either way - it is a cautionary tale of keeping a tight reign on the external forces that one allows to control your life. Certainly a movie that will illicit great conversation afterward.
