An amazing scarefest, one of the best since The Exorcist. It scared the bejabbers out of me. Not only is it about a horrific inky cloaked, black hatted, clawed monster a la Nosferatu terrorizing an already off-kilter family, it is about blurring the lines between what may be real and what may be illness and hallucination. Essie Davis bedazzles as a single mom coping with the long term stress of loss and dealing with a son who is at times sweet and at other times a holy terror (presented brilliantly by Noah Wiseman, one of the scariest children since Damien in The Omen) An assured feature directorial debut by Australian actress Jennifer Kent. I think I shall hire a bodyguard, the next time I go downstairs to the cellar.
