The Barefoot Contessa is a film that is told in flashback much of the time and deals with the famous 'Maria' of Ava Gardner whose life doesn't pan out well at all. This is supposed to be Gardner's greatest role yet she received no Oscar Nomination for her effort. It's actually a story that meanders a good deal and often leaves one puzzled and bored as well. Semi-veteran, at this point, Edmund O'Brien won the Best Supporting Actor of '54 as the narrator and man involved mysteriously with Maria. Though written by 2 time Best Oscar Writer and 2 time Best Director Joseph L. Mankiewicz, the film felt quite garbled to me and way over-rated.
