This movie isn't, to me, the trainwreck that most people are describing. It's a very different movie however... it's a lot more about people's feelings and relationships in the face of a scary, but rather formless natural disaster. It definitely has some horror elements, but it doesn't really dwell on them... the horror is as much what the viewer imagines as what is actually put on screen. The Happening is a moody 'tone poem' kind of movie, not a brass band concert or a symphony. If it was played for an art house audience, it would be getting more respect. I don't think Shyamalan did his career a favour by doing such a low-key, understated movie. I can see why people aren't liking it... I didn't like it much myself... but I don't think it deserves to be trashed either.
