The Haunting has decidedly been labelled a mini-classic of sorts and it most definitely is a dandy film with tremendous performances from Miss Julie Harris (who never seems to have given a bad performance) and Miss Claire Bloom, all directed by Robert Wise, if not mistaken. It was a time when many films were still being shot in B + W. The Haunting, surely would never have been shot in colour as it would totally have destroyed the ambiance it created. The film is a psychological horror of sorts in which we are subjected to nothing tangible, as it were, yet are terrorized, nonetheless. I would never say the film is lacking, but the constant hyper-buzz about this flic led me to expect a lot more. My viewing left me satisfied but no where near what I thought I was going to get.
