I have never read the book so don't mix this up with a book comparison; I don't care about the book. The story was actually good even though a little more action would have been better. The 1st half of the movie was really slow paced and a tad boring I would say. The characters were pretty good as was the premise. I do understand they can't turn this into a blood&gore movie for it is starring kids, but a bit more action would have been welcomed. Plot was previsible, but with the good acting, the good casting and the way the story unfolds, I pretty much enjoyed it. =)
