Set in the 1950s and originally written by French comic Jacques Tati, this is a sad, wistful movie. The time of the music hall magician has passed, but the Illusionist soldiers on, although, about to be finessed by new forms of entertainment (rock music, tv.) The Illusionist finds temporary happiness with an "adopted daughter" whom he dotes upon. But, here is an air of the temporary in this relationship, since, of course there is always a split between generations. This animated feature is rich and rewarding. It is entirely hand-drawn. And it left me with tears in my eyes.
