This incarnation of The Mummy didn't work for me... the plot was stale, the actors' chemistry was weak and the storytelling was unimaginative. The things that were new in the series didn't nearly make up for it. I missed Rachel Weizz... while Maria Bello is a fine performer usually, her mediocre English accent and put-on heroics just seemed silly. Were there no British actresses that could have possibly fit the role? Jet Li as the evil emperor wasn't nearly as interesting a villain as Imhotep, whose doomed and perverse love for Anuksunamoon made him a far richer character. Michelle Yeoh was wasted after the action of the introductive backstory, which was great. Pretty much all the plot twists and devices were simply rejigged from the earlier movies. The dumb thing is that the various parts of this movie could have been assembled into something that worked a lot better. Instead of concentrating the story around Rick and Evie, making their son the lead actor in his own story, his adventure and romance with his pretty ninja love interest, would have revitalized the franchise, even if the 'old folks' were relegated to supporting or even cameo roles. As it was... well, there's a strong set-up for another sequel set in Peru, but I don't plan on seeing it unless it's far more exciting than this entry.
