I absolutely loved the first movie and went into this thinking it would be very hard to top that. Well, I was right. The movie is fine but lacks some of the sophistication of the first film. The addition of Richard Gere is very fine - he blends in very well with the cast. There are so many story lines going at once and so many forced situations. Naturally Maggie Smith's character has some fabulous zingers as do some other characters. Penelope Wilton's character is just as bitter and annoying as she was in the first film - not even sure why her character was forced into this script except to use each actor again. (Except Tom Wilkinson who escaped through his death in the first film.) All in all - while I rated the first Marigold Hotel film a solid 10 this one only gets a 7. I feel like we got our money's worth for the price of the ticket but not much more.
