    The Theory of Everything

This is a romantic love story, one born of a chance meeting between a young aspiring hard-science student and an otherwise naive humanities student and ending with everything apparently turning out okay, as Hawkins' famous computerized voice intones. I suppose it helps to have a Penthouse magazine arrive via snail-mail at the opportune moment to add a little spice and humor to an otherwise strange and obviously tiresome existence, this just as a nurse comes to take over the care of the invalid from his long suffering and needy wife thus freeing her to move on. And of course in true Hollywood style, the nurse is a beautiful and sexy redhead who just happens to love the physicist for his mind (oh, if only that were true for the majority of us lowly male primates!) One can hardly feel sorry for this great mind of man when the equivalent of a Penthouse model, complete with postmodern morals is there to take care of his every need. There are some interesting science versus religion versus existential questions throughout and the analyzing of these is either implied or an actual ongoing part of the story and the expected marriage infidelity issues are not censored. As with A Beautiful Mind starring Russell Crowe, there are the obligatory professional academics challenging and then hanging on to every profound word uttered from the mouth of this genius (or computer voice as the case may be) however, which belief ultimately triumphs over the other is left to the audience to decide. As Steven says, it is irrelevant whether you believe in the science or not, the answer provided by the theory is simply the way it all happens to be and the math says so. By the way, who's mysterious child was that anyway, born of the pastor or the scientist? As with many other things about this movie, the answer is left to the viewer to discern. Still, there are worse ways to spend a couple hours of one's time on a sunny afternoon and oh, the movie will not soon fade from memory either, that is if you have a memory that is able to fade.
