    The Valley of Decision

This is such a remarkable film from the 1940's with a huge sprawling canvas of the early 20th century as its background. The young Mary Rafferty goes to work for the wealthy Scott family, great industrialists. From the moment she steps into the home, nothing is ever the same again. This is epic film making with many twists and turns, all surprises to delight the moviegoer. The character development and performances of the major and supporting players are stunningly great. It was Greer Garson's 5th Oscar Nomination in as many years. Gregory Peck in his second year as a major star shines as the overburdened Paul Scott caught in a loveless marriage. The entire supporting cast is great and, as a big bonus, one gets to see the very young Jessica Tandy in a very mean-spirited role. This is three years before she played Tennessee Williams's Blanche Du Bois on Broadway to great, great acclaim.
