The Wolf of Wall Street

You will either love or hate this movie; one way or another, you'll react strongly to this over-the-top indictment of Wall Street greed in the 80s. The good: Leonardo DiCaprio is astounding in this movie, with strong support from Jonah Hill and Margot Robbie. Memorable cameos by Jean Dujardin ("The Artist") and Joanna Lumley ("Absolutely Fabulous") Director Martin Scorsese and editor Thelma Schoonmaker team up again to create a visually compelling story that reminds me a bit of Goodfellas. The bad: Three hours is a bit much. I'm guessing Scorsese is deliberately belabouring his point, but there were many scenes that could have been shortened. Two and a half hours would have been sufficient. Not sure how this movie escaped a NC-17 rating, but the sexual content might offend some viewers. The ugly: Since the movie is based on a real-life Wall Street fraudster, the subject matter is cynical and pays no attention to the victims who lost money. Recommendation: If you're a fan of Scorsese, or you enjoyed films such as "Wall Street" and "Boiler Room", go see this film. If you're not prepared to watch three hours of debauchery, give it a pass.
